The Admirals signed their first player in franchise history 1989 - 90 The Admirals' first game was at the Scope on October 28, 1989, defeating the Virginia Lancers 6 - 3. The Admirals finished the year with a 29 - 29 - 2 record earning them fifth place and a playoff birth. They were eventually eliminated by the Erie Panthers in the first round. 6/7/89 The Admirals sign ex Toronto Maple Leafs head coach John Brophy as head coach and head of hockey operations. 11/22/89 Tom Bissett scored 6 goals in a 10-2 victory vs. Greensboro. Bissett's record for points, 9, and number of goals in a game has yet to be broken. 12/12/89 Brian Martin scored his first of three consecutive hat tricks in a 8-5 victory over the Knoxville Cherokees. He is the only professional hockey player to score three consecutive hat tricks in hockey history. 3/9/90 Admirals clinch a playoff birth for the first time in franchise history. 3/90 Admirals Goalie Alain Raymond was voted top netminder of the ECHL. 1990-1991 The Admirals win the first of two consecutive Jack Riley Trophies on 4/11/91. The Admirals defeated the Greensboro Monarchs, one which ended in a triple overtime victory in game 3 to win the championship. 11/13/90 Tom Bissett was the very first Admiral to be call up to the NHL, who would be playing for the Detroit Red Wings. 11/16/90 Brian Martin passed Trevor Jobe, to become the Admirals all time leading scorer. 11/25/90 Admirals recieved their first #1 ranking in franchise history. 4/11/91 Admirals won their second Jack Riley Cup championship by defeating the Greensboro Generals in 5 games. 1991-1992 Admirals win their second championship in a row. 10/25/91 Admirals hoisted the Riley Cup championship banner on opening night. 4/17/92 The Admirals completed a sweep of Louisville to win the championship two years in a row. 1991-1992 Admirals finish in second place and earn a playoff birth for four years in a row. 11/10/92 Admirals set team mark for most goals scored and prevail for victory with an 11-0 win over Richmond. 11/14/92 Mark Bernard notched his 50th win by defeating the Erie Panthers 4-1 on the road. 2/24/93 Nick Vitucci set a club record with 45 saves against the Dayton Bombers at the Nutter Center. 1993-1994 The Admirals scored 298 goals, 95 of which were power play goals, and secured a playoff spot for the fifth consecutive year. 12/29/93 Victor Gervais passes Murray Hood as all time assist scorer by getting three assists in a 6-1 victory over Greensboro. 3/4/94 Mark Michaud got his 33rd win breaking the previous record of wins in one season of 32 by Toledo Storm goaltender Mike Williams. Michaud set new league records with 65 appearances, 3723 minutes played, and 38 wins. He also tied the Admirals franchise record for saves in a game, turning aside 45 shots. 1996-1997 Darryl Paquette broke Michaud's record for saves in a game with 49. 1997-1998 The Admirals had a mediocre regular season and the playoffs by finishing a cinderella season to win the championship against the Pensacola Pilots. The Admirals were the first team in ECHL history to be seated dead last going into the playoffs and go on to win the cup. 10/16/98 The Admirals dropped their 1997-98 Kelly Cupchampions banner on opening night. April 1999 After dominating Richmond in game 1, the Renegades come back to win the first round series and send the Admirals home for the season. 4/2/00 The Admirals closed out the regular season with a, 4-1, home victory over arch rival Richmond Sunday, April 2, and, as the fourth seed in the 1999-2000 playoffs, earned a date with fifth seeded Huntington Blizzard in he first round of the 2000 Kelly Cup Playoffs. 4/17/00 The Admirals shutout the Trenton Titans, 1-0, in game one of the second round of the Kelly Cup playoffs 6/14/00 Admirals owners Mark Garcea and Page Johnson announced today that the Norfolk Admirals, as affiliates of the Chicago Blackhawks (NHL), will make the transition from the ECHL to the American Hockey League (AHL) this fall at Norfolk Scope
